Body-Image Challenges...

…are complex and, sadly, so very common.


ON THE SURFACE, IT APPEARS AS IF EXPERIENCING NEGATIVE BODY-IMAGE MEANS THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH OUR BODY ITSELF -ITS SHAPE, SIZE AND APPEARANCE. THAT IS WHY A LOT OF OUR ENERGY AND EFFORT GETS CHANNELLED INTO CHANGING THE BODY IN ALL SORTS OF -OFTEN PUNISHING- WAYS.

HOWEVER, BODY DISSATISFACTION IS ONLY THE EXTERNAL, VISIBLE SYMPTOM OF A DEEPER, INTERNAL EXPERIENCE THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR BODY OR OUR APPEARANCE, AND EVERYTHING TO DO WITH OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH OURSELVES AND, SPECIFICALLY, WITH OUR EMOTIONS.

Body-image issues are, in reality, emotional issues.

In the past decade of supporting womxn in healing their relationship with their bodies and with food, it has become very clear to me that the single most important skill we all need to develop, in order to find lasting peace with and real freedom in our bodies, is emotional awareness and regulation; the ability to identify, name, embrace, contain, feel, and properly respond to and support our emotions.

Most of us have never been taught what to do with how we feel. On the contrary, it is very likely that, both on a personal and a collective/societal level, we have been conditioned to bypass and ignore our emotions, ‘pull ourselves together’, ‘be strong’, ‘rise above’ how we feel, in order to maintain appearances.

However, emotions don’t just disappear if we -consciously or unconsciously- deny them. The energy that we don’t acknowledge and allow in finds other channels to move through, giving rise to thoughts, behaviours and patterns that distract our attention from the original experience and true source/core of the issue; in other words, we develop defences against feeling and coping mechanisms that are often not really helpful or even relevant.

Body dissatisfaction, from this perspective, becomes one of the ways we avoid feeling.


IN THIS COURSE, WE ARE GOING TO UNPACK NEGATIVE BODY-IMAGE EXPERIENCES -FEELING BAD, THINKING NEGATIVELY, SPEAKING JUDGMENTALLY AND BEHAVING PUNISHINGLY TOWARD OUR BODIES AND OURSELVES- AND MOVE FROM THE LEVEL OF THE SYMPTOM (THE BODY/APPEARANCE) TO THAT OF THEIR TRUE SOURCE (EMOTION).



In the first part of the course, I will introduce you to one of the core frameworks I have been using in my work, The Layers of Life Experience; a deeply enlightening lens through which you will gain a profound understanding of how emotions really work, as well as how we unconsciously build layers of protection around our emotional core that keep us separate from our authentic self and our aliveness. You will discover exactly how body-image issues arise in response to disowned feelings, and be prompted to more deeply explore your own patterns.

In the second part, we will break down a negative body-image experience into the five stages it consists of and explore how we can ‘peel back the onion’ and identify what we truly feel and need, when we feel bad about our bodies. We will explore how to break out of the body-image cycle, through specific steps, tools and practices.
