The inner critic is the source of body shame -and all kinds of unnecessary, toxic shame beyond that.

It is the inner critic, both personal and collective, that initiates and perpetuates the battle against our bodies, our weight and our appearance; the part that convinces us we need to change how we look at any cost. It is the source of perfectionism, setting impossible standards for us and making us ignore our most basic human needs in order to attain them. It is the voice behind imposter syndrome, causing us to feel like a fraud and holding us back from claiming the space we deserve and expressing our potential.

My Story



I LIVED AN INNER CRITIC-DOMINATED LIFE FOR YEARS.

For the entire first quarter of my life, including 7 years of living with an eating disorder and an incredibly negative body and self-image, I was completely identified with this part. I perceived it to be me -the ‘good me’, that is. Rather, the ‘perfect me’ that I aspired to be. It was the loudest voice in my system, leading my every decision, while I tried my hardest to religiously follow its rules and values. When I could do so, I was thrilled and took pride in what a good girl I was. When I couldn’t live up to my critic’s expectations of me on the other hand, I would have to live through intense, full-on critic attacks, torturing me and making me feel completely worthless for days and weeks at a time…

IT WAS DURING MY SOMATIC MOVEMENT THERAPY TRAINING THAT I FIRST EXPERIENCED A WAY TO WORK WITH THIS VOICE AND FREE MYSELF FROM ITS INFLUENCE -AND THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING.

It’s not that I have never had to deal with this part since -not at all. I don’t think it ever disappears (and if it does, it probably means that we are living a little too safely…). What has changed is my relationship with it and the fact that I have both the knowledge and the practices to listen to it, understand it and transform (alchemise) the energy it holds, from the inside out.

What’s different now, most importantly, is that it does not hold the leading part in my life’s play anymore. I don’t operate from it.
